Gotham FC forward Katie Lampson didn’t want to be the center of attention when she played the final match of her decade-plus career in the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup.

In fact, teammates were unaware that she was retiring until after the confetti rained down and the trophy celebrations ended following Gotham’s 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Current.

When teammates returned to the dressing room at the neutral site of Columbus, Ohio’s ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, Lampson let the group know that she was hanging up her boots. She would later officially retire from the sport on Tuesday.

“As a group, we all found out after the game, she didn’t want anyone to know,” midfielder Savannah McCaskill said during Friday’s media availability. “She actually didn’t want anyone to know. It was just because she didn’t want the spotlight to be put on her and take away from the team’s moment, which I think shows a lot of her character and a lot of who she is as a human being and a person and a teammate.”

Lampson played for 28 minutes in her final match after coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute. The 34-year-old NWSL veteran didn’t want the pre-match tributes or a guard of honor. She just wanted to play her part in the victory, walk away from professional soccer quietly and on her terms, with one more piece of silverware.

McCaskill and Gotham teammates were delighted to fittingly send Lampson into retirement with one last career achievement.

“When everyone found out they were, there was nothing but happiness and joy for her,” McCaskill recalled. “Like I said, she’s had an amazing career. If this is her time to step away from the game and see what’s next for her, then it’s her time. So I think we just really wish her all the best. We want nothing but happiness and joy and fulfillment and everything else that hopefully she will find for whatever’s next.

“Katie has had a great career in the NWSL and overseas. So it’s always really special when you can send a player off with a championship with a trophy of any kind. I think that’s really cool to be able to do for her. She doesn’t like the spotlight, she doesn’t like to be the center of attention — she doesn’t want any of that.”

Throughout her career, Lampson made a habit of scoring decisive goals in high-pressure matches.

Last NWSL playoffs, her 121st-minute extra-time goal lifted the Bats past the Current in the quarterfinals en route to winning the 2025 NWSL championship.

Her 107th-minute goal in the 2023 NWSL playoff semifinals against Portland Thorns FC booked Gotham’s place in the 2023 NWSL Championship Game, where the Bats prevailed over OL Reign to capture the club’s first NWSL title.

Juan Carlos Amorós on Lampson: ‘She Brought a Different Dimension to This Club’

Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós saluted Lampson’s impact on the pitch as well as her valuable experience as a dressing room mentor to teammates.

“Katie is more than a player,” Amorós stated. “She’s been with us on and off, but for years she’s been part of every trophy that we’ve won. She’s played a very important role in all of them. She brought a different dimension to this club.

“She probably wasn’t recognized internationally at the same level as some of the other players on our roster, but her ability, her day-to-day mentality, her readiness to be in the starting lineup or come off the bench, and how she helped behind the scenes made her very special to us.

“She decided it was the right time to finish her career, and we were fully supportive of that. For her last game to end with another trophy, and to have her family there and celebrate it in her own way, we feel privileged to have been a part of Katie’s journey.”

Lampson finished her Gotham career with 67 matches played for the club across all competitions. She scored nine goals and registered three assists, and said farewell to the game her way.
