Gotham FC forward Katie Lampson announced her immediate retirement from women’s soccer on Tuesday morning.

The 34-year-old appeared in 67 matches for Gotham across all competitions, scoring nine goals and recording three assists. Throughout her decade-plus career spent in the United States, Australia and some of Europe’s top leagues, Lampson had a flair for scoring dramatic, match-winning goals.

She netted five career game-winning goals for Gotham, including the NWSL regular season, the NWSL Challenge Cup, the NWSL playoffs and the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup.

Last playoffs, Lampson’s 121st-minute extra-time goal propelled the Bats past the NWSL Shield-winning Kansas City Current in the quarterfinals on the path to winning the 2025 NWSL championship.

Previously, her 107th-minute goal in the 2023 NWSL playoff semifinals against the Portland Thorns booked Gotham’s place in the 2023 NWSL Championship Game, which the Bats were victorious against OL Reign.

Her efforts across two stints with the club helped Gotham lift two NWSL championships, and most recently, the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup.

Fittingly, her final match for the club was last Friday’s NWSL Challenge Cup victory over Kansas City. She made a 28-minute substitute appearance in the 2-0 victory at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, Columbus, Ohio.

“Soccer has been my guiding light for the last 30 years,” Lampson said of her decision to close the book on her career. “It presented opportunities to see the world, meet lifelong friends and grow as a person. Soccer helped me earn an education, become comfortable being uncomfortable in new environments and challenge myself every day.

“My career took many unpredictable turns, reminding me to accept my lack of control. I’m most proud that I learned to find an internal motivation and confidence amongst the chaos.

“I’m hanging ‘em up, proud of all that this career has brought me – the good, the bad, the highs and lows. I’ll always be thankful for the journey and cherish the lessons learned. A special thank you to my family, who rode the coaster with me, supporting me no matter how far I traveled.”

“Katie has played an important role in some of the biggest moments in our club’s history,” Averbuch West stated. “We are grateful for everything she has contributed to Gotham FC and congratulate her on an outstanding career.”

Lampson played nine NWSL regular-season matches in her final campaign of 2026. She played for a total of 304 minutes and completed 94 of 127 total passes.

She appeared in a total of 163 matches across all competitions for five different NWSL clubs (Washington Spirit, Boston Breakers, Utah Royals, Houston Dash, Gotham), collecting 21 goals, eight assists and nine match-winning goals.

Congratulations to Katie on a splendid career, and all the best to her and her family in retirement.
