Gotham FC travelled to Ohio and will come home with the NWSL Challenge Cup after winning the competition for the first time in the club’s history.

The Bats prevailed over the Kansas City Current at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus in a 2-0 victory on a rainy and humid Friday night.

“I’m super proud of them because the way they work every day when we are back in Jersey,” head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said. “We travel and we have to go through so many things. They always find a way to come up on top. Obviously, when Tierna [Davidson] and Mandy [Freeman] were lifting that trophy, it was really a moment of pride because it’s also a trophy that we didn’t have at the club. So, yes, it’s a big day for us.”

Gotham controlled possession in the first half and gained a 1-0 lead before halftime through a sweetly struck penalty by Esther González.

NWSL Rookie of the Year candidate Jordynn Dudley continues to unlock defenses with her deft turns. The 21-year-old forward weaved past Kansas City defender Kayla Sharples and tucked the ball into the bottom corner to seal the victory.

“I think that what Jordan brings, obviously everyone knows that she’s really good and deadly in those situations, 1v1,” Amorós explained.

Veteran defender Mandy Freeman made her first appearance for Gotham since the Bats’ victory over AS FAR in the third-place game of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup on February 1.

Freeman’s season had been interrupted by hamstring troubles. The club recently recognized her 10-year anniversary with the organization.

Following Friday’s victory, Gotham FC will return to NWSL regular-season play on July 4 at Snapdragon Stadium against San Diego Wave FC.
