The women’s soccer world is buzzing about Sam Kerr’s return to reigning NWSL champions Gotham FC — but when will the superstar striker make her first appearance after rejoining the club?

Supporters are eager to see the two-time NWSL MVP in action, but they’ll have to wait at least a couple of weeks.

At the earliest, Kerr will be eligible to play in The Queens Classic on July 15 at Citi Field when the Bats take on the Washington Spirit in a 2025 NWSL Championship rematch.

NWSL rules prevent Kerr from being registered until July 14, when the NWSL transfer window opens. The Queens Classic comes one day later, so it’s possible that Kerr could take part in the highly anticipated match at Flushing Meadows–Corona Park.

If the 32-year-old Australian ace is able to lace up her boots and step onto the pitch at Citi Field, it would add an extra layer of intrigue with her competing against United States women’s national team star, Trinity Rodman.

On Monday, Kerr signed a multiyear deal with Gotham that runs through the 2030 season.

“I’m incredibly excited to return to Gotham FC and to this city,” Kerr said on Monday. “This club was an important part of my journey, and to come back at this moment, with everything Gotham has built, is really special. The ambition here is clear, and I’m looking forward to helping this team compete for trophies and create more history.”

She most recently played in Australia’s 3-1 friendly victory over Mexico on June 9 at Sydney’s CommBank Stadium.

In her previous stint with Gotham back when the club was known as Sky Blue FC, Kerr scored 28 goals across 40 matches in all competitions. The 5-foot-6 striker recorded 17 goals in 30 matches during her final season with Chelsea.

The Queens Classic at Citi Field would be a fitting stage for Kerr to start her second chapter with the Bats.

Having recently won the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup, Gotham will look to Kerr to level up their NWSL championship defense.
