Gotham FC head into Wednesday’s road match against Bay FC without veteran defender Emily Sonnett, who recently underwent surgery after sustaining an apparent non-contact left knee injury.
The club is yet to provide further updates regarding Sonnett’s surgery and timetable, though an announcement is expected later this week.
It’s been a busy week of transactions for the second-place Bats, who are looking to build on a four-game unbeaten streak.
Gotham FC Adjusting After Significant Roster Changes
All-time franchise-leading goalscorer Esther González agreed to a mutual contract termination on Monday. Forward Khyah Harper joined the Houston Dash on a free transfer on Tuesday afternoon.
Later on Tuesday, midfielder Taryn Torres was activated from the season-ending injury list and will be available for selection for the first time since September 2025.
If that wasn’t enough, recently-acquired midfielder Denise O’Sullivan was ruled out ahead of Wednesday’s contest due to a knee injury.
“It’s unfortunate to lose such high-profile key players,” acting head coach Shaun Harris said during Tuesday’s pre-match press conference. “You never want to see that happen. At the same time, there’s two sides to every coin. It presents an opportunity for the players that haven’t had as much minutes to step up and show what they can do.
“So, on one side, we’re devastated that we’re losing players. On the other side, it’s going to be interesting to see who can we rely on, who can step in and fill those shoes. So I think it’s a good opportunity for the rest of the squad. We still have a really good roster.”
Gotham To Be Tested by Bay FC’s Dangerous Transition Play
Bay FC are currently 14th in the NWSL table and is dealing with several absences of their own.
Anouk Denton (lower leg), Caprice Dydasco (maternity leave), Alyssa Malonson (knee – season-ending injury), Emily Menges (maternity Leave) have all been ruled out for Wednesday, and forward Racheal Kundananji is away with Zambia at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite some of the players missing for Bay FC, Harris is aware of the threat that Emma Coates’ side possesses with their fast-paced counterattacks.
“It’s going to be an interesting game,” Harris stated. “I think Bay offer some definite, key threats over the last couple of games in terms of transition. When we looked at the data, [they’re] probably the team that spends the most time in transition.
“They have really quick forwards. At the same time, we’ve analysed the areas that we need to get better. As long as we can maintain and control the ball and sustain possession in the key areas and prevent those turnovers, I think that puts us in a good place. We want to look to start how we started the last game. We spoke about it as a group. It’s about can we expand that over the 90 minutes.”
Home Comforts Await, but Gotham FC Must Finish Road Trip Strong
After Wednesday, Gotham FC will wrap up its road trip on Saturday against the Houston Dash. The Bats last played at Sports Illustrated Stadium on May 31 when they completed a 1-0 victory over the Dash. Gotham will finally return to home soil in Harrison on August 7 against San Diego Wave FC.
“The travel can be a little hard sometimes, but we’ve just been putting in that work in training, and we’re really excited to get out there,” midfielder Sofia Cook explained.
With González no longer with the club, star striker Sam Kerr will lead the line. The Australian international is averaging 0.7 goals per 90 minutes on the road, which is the highest among all players in NWSL history to record at least 1,000 minutes in away venues.

In a surprise, Shelby Hogan gets the nod to start against Bay FC. Ann-Katrin Berger was named as a substitute. Torres also made the bench.

It will be intriguing to see how Gotham fares in San Jose after undergoing several roster alterations while being shorthanded by injuries.
Wednesday’s match at PayPal Park will kick off at 10 p.m. Eastern Time with CBS Sports Network carrying the national broadcast.
