Gotham FC forward Midge Purce admitted that she had a “Marvel moment” when star striker Sam Kerr entered the match in the 63rd minute of Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Seattle Reign FC.
The Bats were trailing 2-0 at that point in the contest. Kerr’s arrival immediately disrupted and stretched Seattle’s defense. Striker Esther González netted a brace, and midfielder Rose Lavelle scored the dramatic 97th-minute game-winning goal.

“I’m a huge Marvel fan, so I was really excited when I saw her coming on,” Purce said of Kerr following Saturday’s victory at a rain-soaked Icahn Stadium. “I just had this Marvel moment. We’re bringing on the Hulk! It was just amazing.
“She came on, she brought up so much energy. I think she made some chances out of nothing, which gets the momentum going and helps the team really believe. She was really critical in build-up play. So she’s fantastic. You can’t have a better addition.”
It was Kerr’s second appearance for Gotham since she rejoined the club on June 29. The 32-year-old two-time NWSL MVP is getting closer to starting for the Bats.
So far, the Australian international has made two substitute appearances for Gotham, totaling 53 minutes. She has recorded one assist and four shots.
Gotham’s Star-Studded Attack Feels Like ‘The Avengers’
Given the star power on Gotham’s roster, it certainly feels a bit like The Avengers with Kerr, Lavelle, Esther, Guro Reiten, Jaedyn Shaw and Ann-Katrin Berger teaming up.
“It was amazing to have the confidence in all the players around me, the experience around me and the mentality around me to know that we can, and I really believe that we would come back from that deficit,” Purce explained.
Gotham will begin a three-match road trip on Friday when they face Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park. Lead assistant coach Shaun Harris will serve as acting head coach until September while head coach Juan Carlos Amorós is on a five-week parental leave.
The Bats will return home to Sports Illustrated on August 7 when they host San Diego Wave FC.
