Days before the 35th Hudson River Derby, Red Bull New York Head of Sport Julian de Guzman sat down with South Ward Central and outlined why experienced defender Tim Parker is a valuable asset for the club on the field and an essential component within the dressing room.
“What his presence has done for this group has been enormous,” de Guzman told South Ward Central. “He doesn’t play a ton of minutes, but his presence helps the locker room move forward.”
Parker Provides ‘Father Figure’ Presence Within Youthful Red Bull New York Dressing Room
De Guzman understands that there must be a balance of older, wiser professionals to help guide a youthful dressing room whose average age is roughly 23 years old and includes several first-team regulars aged 18 and younger.
“We’re such a young team, and that’s such a big part of our philosophy, but you need to have balance,” de Guzman explained. “You use the example of players who are almost parents and fathers and run a household, and that’s a skill set that really helps balance the locker room, where you’re going to have your leaders who come in and lead now, not just from a household, but they’re now leading a locker room of young players.”
The 45-year-old executive praised Parker for being a stabilizing leader who brings a calm, consistent approach that can rub off positively on a young roster.
“On good days, on bad days, he’s a guy that you can lean on and depend on because of what he is as a person and a human being,” de Guzman said. “So that’s why it’s so important when you identify players and you’re looking at guys that maybe we might mean mature players coming in next year, that helps balance that and offset that.
“Those are the guys that you look at where you say, phew, this guy has big responsibilities. He takes care of a home. That means I’m sure he can do the job in the locker room as well.”
Parker Responds in a Big Way After Being Brought Back Into Starting XI
Prior to last Friday’s derby clash against New York City FC, the 33-year-old Parker had only started five MLS matches this season.
With first-choice center-back Justin Che missing consecutive matches due to an ankle injury, Parker stepped in comfortably for the Red Bulls in back-to-back victories over the Columbus Crew and NYCFC.
Parker played an instrumental role in Friday’s 1-0 shutout win over the rival Pigeons. The 6-foot-2 defender made nine clearances, two blocks and won four of six aerial duels.
Bradley on Parker: ‘He’s Been a Real Professional and Real Leader in Every Way’
Red Bull New York head coach Michael Bradley saluted Parker’s professionalism and readiness.
“Tim’s experience in leadership speaks for itself,” Bradley said following Friday’s victory at Yankee Stadium. “In a different kind of year for Tim, because he’s not played as much as he’s used to, he has been a real professional and a real leader in every way.
“When we’ve needed him, he’s been there. So that part is amazing. As a coach, when guys who don’t play every single week get their chance and they take it and they play and perform at such a high level, that’s awesome.”
Though Parker has lost a bit of pace with age, his positioning and reading of the game haven’t diminished. His ability to make key clearances and blocks was on full display throughout the derby win.
Adri Mehmeti on Parker: ‘He’s Very Smart, Makes Big Plays’
“Tim is a very experienced player,” midfielder Adri Mehmeti said following Friday’s victory. “When he comes into games, he’s going in there to do his job.
“Obviously, Tim is a little bit slower, but he’s very smart — using his body, making big plays. Tim had a really good game.”
Once Che is ready to return, Parker will likely drop back to the bench in a supporting role. But even when Parker isn’t playing, it’s clear that he’s doing a lot of work behind the scenes as a mentor and a sounding board.
“We try to encourage these younger guys that even if they think it’s their fault in the moment, mistakes are going to happen,” Parker said earlier this season.
Red Bull New York will return home to Sports Illustrated Stadium on Saturday to face St. Louis City SC. In 2023 and 2024, Parker called St. Louis home and it’s likely that players within their dressing room benefitted from his advice and example.
