After months of rehabilitation and weeks of careful workload management that followed her March 21 season debut, Gotham FC captain Tierna Davidson has returned to full strength as the Bats’ dynamic leader.
The 27-year-old defender showed why she is the model of a complete defender throughout Gotham’s 2-0 road victory over Seattle Reign FC on Friday.
Jaedyn Shaw’s 23rd-minute opening goal put Gotham ahead 1-0, and Davidson secured three points for the visitors by scoring the second goal of the match in the 56th minute from a well-worked corner routine.
Guro Reiten whipped the ball into the box, and Jaelin Howell flicked it backward into a crowd. Savannah McCaskill guided the ball to Sofia Cook, who was waiting on the outside of the box, and slid the ball to Davidson, who delivered the final touch.
Davidson was quickly surrounded by jubilant teammates who were delighted for her, given her long road back to peak performance following a season-ending torn left ACL injury that occurred on March 28 of last season.
The United States international admitted that she wasn’t sure how to celebrate after a span of 2,459 days separated Friday’s tally from her first and only previous NWSL regular-season goal, which came back on August 22, 2019, while she was a member of the Chicago Red Stars.
“You can see that I have no idea how to celebrate a goal,” Davidson said. “I’m very happy,” Davidson said following the victory at Lumen Field. “What is it, 2,000-something days (since her previous NWSL regular-season goal)? That’s a little bit embarrassing, but also that’s not a stat that I care much about. But no, I’m very happy to help the team to win.”
How a Full-Strength Davidson Transforms Gotham’s Back Line

Even if she hadn’t found the net, it still would have been a Player of the Match performance from Gotham’s inspirational skipper.
No player on either team had more touches than Davidson’s 97. She set the tempo and organized attacks from the back. The 5-foot-10 defender also led the match with 12 defensive contributions, won five of five ground duels and four of five aerial duels.
Acting head coach Shaun Harris, who took charge of the team in head coach Juan Carlos Amorós’ absence, explained how a now fully up to speed Davidson is able to impact matches in a variety of ways.
“She’s now starting to find her groove, and she’s an asset for us both on the ball and off the ball, and the way she can step in and read plays really changes the picture,” Harris said.
“She has the long pass. In behind, she can connect short. She can also drive, which causes a lot of problems for teams, and it’s really difficult to defend against, so we’re really happy with Tierna’s progress. Her getting a goal really cemented that, and I’m really happy for her. She’s working really hard. It’s a real asset to have her on the team, and leading the team.”
Control, Composure and Leadership From the Back

Friday was the first time that Davidson has logged back-to-back 90-minute NWSL appearances since September 2024.
Earlier this season, Amorós described Davidson as one of the world’s most technical defenders.
“Tierna’s such a special player that when she’s on the pitch, she’s probably one of the most technical players that play in the backline, probably in the world,” Amorós proclaimed. “On top of that, she’s left-footed, which is also even more rare. She’s a great leader on and off the pitch. I think she’s so calm on the ball, but I think she’s just a different player for me.
“I would say – I don’t want to put pressure on her – but I think she’s probably the best left-footed center-back on the planet for the way I see the game.”
Gotham Carry Momentum Into Concacaf W Champions Cup

Gotham will now switch their focus to the challenge of repeating as Concacaf W Champions Cup winners after earning victories in four of the last five NWSL matches and putting together a five-game unbeaten streak.
“We’re always looking for ways to push to the next level, and I think we’re going in the right direction,” Harris stated. “We’re happy with the way the team’s going. We still think there’s another level. We still think there’s a few more goals in there. We can really kill the games off. But as far as performance and what we’re setting up, I think that the team is setting a new standard, and we’re trying to maintain that and build from there.”
Last season, the Bats were crowned as the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup winners while Davidson was sidelined for the semifinal and final.
This time around, she’ll be central if Gotham is to lift the championship trophy at Estadio Hidalgo on May 23.
