Long Island native Meredith Speck has signed on with Gotham for the remainder of the year after the club placed defender Emily Sonnett on the season-ending injury list.
Speck trained with her new Gotham teammates on Thursday morning in East Hanover, New Jersey, ahead of Friday’s home match against San Diego Wave FC.
Experienced Speck Adds Depth To Gotham’s Midfield
The 33-year-old midfielder last played for the North Carolina Courage during the 2025 season. She made 100 appearances for North Carolina and helped the Courage win two NWSL Championships, three NWSL Shields and two NWSL Challenge Cups.
Speck is reunited with former Courage teammates Jaedyn Shaw and Denise O’Sullivan, as well as former North Carolina head coach Sean Nahas, who is currently serving as a consultant and interim director of methodology for Gotham.
Injury Update: Sonnett Officially Placed on SEI List
Sonnett was previously ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury away to Portland on July 24.
Because Gotham was at the minimum roster limit of 22 players, Sonnett couldn’t be placed on the SEI list until Thursday after Speck’s signing was made official.
It’s possible that Speck could be handed her Gotham debut in Friday’s match at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Friday’s contest is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. Eastern Time and will be broadcast on Prime Video.
