Rookie forward Jordynn Dudley delivered under pressure by recording a brace in Gotham FC’s hard-fought 2-1 road victory over the North Carolina Courage on Saturday.
After her eighth-minute goal opened the scoring, Dudley would decide the match in dramatic fashion by netting a 91st-minute winner. The 21-year-old was in the right place at the right time as teammate Rose Lavelle directed a downward header into her path.
“She makes the difference,” Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said of Dudley following Saturday’s victory. “We spoke before the game that she can win the games if she stays in the game. It’s very difficult because, again, I don’t know today how many fouls she suffered, and she needs to navigate that side of the game. But at the same time, I think both of her goals, one obviously is fantastic technical ability, but then the second one as well – it shows her personality and winning mentality to get that.
“That second goal in the 91st minute shows a lot of her character. We are incredibly proud of her. She definitely made a difference [on Saturday] and throughout the year, so we couldn’t be happier with her.”
Dudley Staying Focused During the Final Stretch of the NWSL Regular Season
Gotham became the first team to punch its ticket to the 2026 NWSL Playoffs. Should the first-place Bats keep up their pace, the club will clinch its first NWSL Shield.
With five regular-season games remaining, Dudley isn’t getting ahead of herself. She’s keeping her focus on consistency and taking a one-game-at-a-time approach.
“We go into every game with the same mindset and really execute it, too,” she said. “Yeah, we go into every game thinking we need to get three points. I don’t think we’re looking too far into the postseason. So, obviously these are important and every game after these are going to be just as important.”
Dudley’s Impact Goes Beyond the Scoresheet
The 5-foot-11 forward has scored four goals and collected two assists through 24 NWSL games played. Though she had gone 12 games without scoring before Saturday, Dudley impacts matches even when she doesn’t find the scoresheet.
“Jordynn steps up every game,” midfielder Denise O’Sullivan said. “It’s just great to see her finding the scoresheet twice.”
Dudley’s rapid straight-line speed stretches opponents, and she throws defenders off balance with her quick changes of pace. Her strength, hold-up play and defensive attributes make her a remarkably complete forward, especially given that she hasn’t played a full NWSL season.
“Her commitment to defend, press and counter-press is part of the DNA of Gotham,” Amorós said earlier this season. “She plays for the team. She’s growing and developing, and the players around her love playing with her.
“She does the things that not everyone likes doing, and she does them all. She’s a player with character. She handles the physicality and fouls well.”
Dudley and Gotham will begin the final stretch of the regular season at home against Chicago Stars FC on Friday night. Should Dudley finish her debut campaign strongly, it could be enough to earn her the 2026 NWSL Rookie of the Year.
