The 32-year-old United States women’s national team star put pen to paper on her new deal on Thursday.

Sonnett has played a major role in Gotham boasting the NWSL’s best defensive record in 2026. The fifth-place Bats have only allowed five goals through 11 league matches.

USWNT and Gotham teammates Jaedyn Shaw recently spoke glowingly of Sonnett’s professional example.

“Emily is extremely intentional,” Shaw explained. “So I think that is something that us young players can learn from. I think that’s what’s kept her in this environment for so long. Having her around has definitely been a blessing for all of us to learn from, look up to and play against every single day.”

Gotham FC president of soccer operations, Yael Averbuch West, praised Sonnett for her reliability and impact on the club’s success, which included an NWSL championship and Concacaf W Champions Cup trophy double in 2025.

“Emily has been an essential part of our team’s success,” said Yael Averbuch West. “Her quality, consistency and standard of excellence have been incredibly valuable to our group, and we’re excited to have her continue with Gotham FC.”

Sonnett surpassed 15,000 career regular-season NWSL minutes in April, becoming the 18th player in history to reach the milestone. The 5-foot-7 defender has made a total of 77 appearances for Gotham across all competitions and continues to build on an unquestioned legacy of excellence.

Gotham will again call on Sonnett’s defensive poise and leadership in Friday’s NWSL Challenge Cup meeting against the Kansas City Current.
