For Gotham FC midfielder Denise O’Sullivan, consistent habits and a disciplined daily routine are critical to her on-field success.
Ahead of Sunday’s NWSL playoff quarterfinal matchup against Seattle Reign FC, O’Sullivan offered a glimpse into how her off-pitch regimen has allowed her to remain at the top of the women’s game at age 32.
While standing pitchside at Gotham FC’s Whippany, New Jersey training facility after another day of meticulous on-field prep, O’Sullivan described her carefully calculated off-pitch ritual as her “religion.”
The Discipline Behind O’Sullivan’s Continued Success

“I think I’ve always been real professional about how I prepare myself,” O’Sullivan said. “You’re only on the pitch for two hours a day, but what you do in that other 24 hours in the day is more important. For me, it’s like religion. I do everything to routine. I make sure my nutrition’s on point to make sure I’m sleeping properly. Every single thing, really, that you need to do to perform your best. That’s what I do within the pitch.”
O’Sullivan has logged hard miles and has been on the receiving end of heavy challenges in midfield battles going back to the days of her youth when she competed for and against boys’ teams in Republic of Ireland youth leagues.
Now, as an 11-year NWSL veteran, O’Sullivan’s purposeful preparation allows her to keep ticking with the precision of a finely tuned timepiece. She remains one of the league’s most reliable midfielders, a highly respected dressing room leader and a presence who offers calmness on the ball to Gotham while creating chaos for her opponents with her tenacity.
O’Sullivan Stays True to Her Tried-and-Tested Routine

They say if something isn’t broken, don’t fix it. The repetition of proven habits adds up to O’Sullivan being sharp on the pitch when matchday arrives.
“So nothing has changed over the years,” O’Sullivan said. “It’s just keep taking care of my body as best as I can and make sure that once game day comes, I can go out there and give everything.”
Gotham FC teammate Meredith Speck knows O’Sullivan better than almost anyone, having spent 10 seasons together between a long association with the North Carolina Courage and their first season with the Bats.
O’Sullivan’s engine-like contributions make her appear larger than her 5-foot-4 frame suggests.
“She is so energetic — she’s everywhere on the field,” Speck told South Ward Central last month. “We used to joke that she’s so small, but she’s truly a destroyer. She has a phenomenal touch and is always cool, calm and collected. So she is truly such an asset to any team.”
O’Sullivan has only given Gotham supporters a taste of her best football through her first 11 matches for the club since her arrival from Women’s Super League side Liverpool F.C. Women in July.
Previously, she helped the Courage to two NWSL championships, where she demonstrated an ability to thrive under the playoff spotlight.
O’Sullivan Ready to Make Her Mark for Gotham in the NWSL Playoffs

Now, she’ll have the chance to add to her postseason reputation in a Gotham kit.
“We have a great opportunity ahead of us to be in this position,” O’Sullivan said. “In the playoffs, it’s about giving that extra one percent and we’re going to need everyone to do that on Sunday. So the team’s locked in. We’re really focused.
“I think we’re just going to take it with both hands, and we’re playing in front of our home fans again at the weekend. So we’re going to go out there and try and put in a really good performance and ultimately move on to the next round.”
Sunday’s quarterfinal meeting against Seattle is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The match will be broadcast nationally on ABC and ESPN Deportes. It will also be available to stream on the ESPN App for ESPN Unlimited subscribers.
