Red Bull New York captain Emil Forsberg is expected to sign a contract extension to remain with the club through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season according to Daniel Kristofferson of Sportbladet.
Though no official announcement has been made, the 35-year-old midfielder will extend his contract according to the Swedish outlet.
The 2027 MLS Sprint Season will begin in February with the regular season ending in April. The MLS Cup playoffs will take place in May.
It’s understandable why several MLS teams, including the Red Bulls, are avoiding major roster restructuring given the abbreviated sprint season schedule.
Forsberg has started 22 MLS matches and made 28 regular-season appearances. He has scored four goals and registered eight assists.
Lately, the creative midfielder has been used by Michael Bradley as a substitute, with Mohammed Sofo starting in place of Forsberg in an advanced central midfield role.
Forsberg has appeared in 80 career MLS regular-season matches, recording 24 goals and 24 assists in his time with the Red Bulls.
Report Suggests Forsberg Will Return to Allsvenskan Following 2027 MLS Sprint Season

According to the same report, Forsberg is expected to return to the Swedish Allsvenskan after the MLS Sprint Season. He began his professional career with his hometown team, GIF Sundsvall, who are currently in the second division, Superettan. He would later spend two top-flight seasons with Malmö FF, who are currently eighth in the Allsvenskan.
South Ward Central previously spoke to Forsberg about his decision to retire from the Swedish national team.
“I came with the conclusion I’m going to end my time in the Swedish national team,” Forsberg told South Ward Central in July. “When the decision came out, I’m very calm and relaxed in myself as well.”
Forsberg, Red Bulls Giving ‘Everything’ in Push for MLS Cup Playoff Berth

The Red Bulls’ No. 10 vowed to do everything possible to help New York reach the 2026 MLS Cup playoffs.
“I promise you guys, we’re going to do everything we can to make the playoffs,” Forsberg told South Ward Central last Thursday.
“We’ve got to do whatever we can to win those games because we want to be in the playoffs. So for us, it’s important that we as a team come together in this period because it’s all to play for. We have all to get. So it’s going to be exciting.”
Red Bull New York currently holds the ninth and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference. Forsberg and the Red Bulls will face the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
