United States women’s national team head coach Emma Hayes named a 26-player training camp roster ahead of two October friendly matches against the reigning Women’s World Cup champions Spain.

In-form Gotham FC forward Jaedyn Shaw was surprisingly left off the USWNT senior roster.

During Tuesday’s press conference, Hayes explained that Shaw will have an opportunity to get minutes for the USWNT under-23 team.

Shaw played for a total of two minutes combined in the USWNT’s June friendlies against Brazil.

“The decision to put Jaedyn with the under-23s was the fact that it’s a two-game window. I didn’t play Jaedyn in the last camp against Brazil and as I’ve said many times, I want to prioritize the development of players and I don’t want less experienced players always sitting on the bench and playing few minutes.”

Though Shaw leads first-place Gotham with nine goals and five assists, she will not take part in the USWNT senior team friendlies to be played on October 10 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., and on October 13 at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania.

Two of Shaw’s Gotham teammates, captain Tierna Davidson and midfielder Rose Lavelle, were named to the USWNT senior roster.

“While we are very much looking forward to playing the World Cup champions, I keep coming back to the journey that we are all on together,” Hayes said. “This camp will be about reestablishing connections after a long break, looking at a few players who haven’t been with us this cycle, and putting on the best performances we can in front of packed stadiums. Of course, our dual focus will also be on our final preparations for the World Cup qualifying tournament.”
