Gotham FC defender and England international Jess Carter has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in King Charles III’s Birthday Honours List for services to football.
The 28-year-old native of Warwick, England, has been recognized for her contributions to the sport as well as her role in helping grow the women’s game in England and throughout the world.
Carter Among Six England Lionesses Awarded an MBE
“It’s amazing to be recognized,” Carter told BBC News. “I’ve seen it with a lot of my Lioness teammates, who’ve done incredible in the sport and continue to raise awareness of women’s football, and sports for everybody really, so it’s an honor to be part of that list.”
Carter was one of six Lionesses awarded an MBE following England’s victory over Spain at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 final. England defeated Spain on penalties to repeat as Women’s Euro champions after previously prevailing over Germany in 2022.
Since making her debut for England on November 28, 2017, Carter has made 55 international appearances. She helped England win the 2023 Women’s Finalissima over Brazil in 2023.
Steady Carter Playing Key Role in Gotham FC’s Defensive Success
Carter moved to Gotham FC in July 2024 after winning 11 major honors Chelsea F.C. Women. She played an instrumental role in Gotham capturing the 2025 NWSL Championship and 2024–25 Concacaf W Champions Cup.
The 5-foot-5 defender has started in all 11 NWSL matches for Gotham this season, playing a key part in the Bats’ league-leading eight shutouts.
Carter and Gotham will return to action on June 26 in a meeting with the Kansas City Current in the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup held at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio.
