Gotham FC captain Tierna Davidson has made a remarkable return to top form after missing nearly a year of action due to a torn left ACL.

The 27-year-old defender has recently been playing some of the best football of her decorated career. Her inspirational performances were recognized on Friday as she was named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month for May.

Davidson has played a full 90 minutes in four of Gotham’s five most recent matches across all competitions. In this past Sunday’s 1-0 home victory over the Houston Dash, she provided an expertly lofted assist to rookie sensation Jordynn Dudley, who scored the 18th-minute match-winner.

Following the win, head coach Juan Carlos Amorós praised Davidson’s ability to connect pinpoint passes to teammates.

“Those moments where you have to break a low block or those spaces are created in behind the back line, she really played some fantastic balls,” Amorós stated. “The goal came from that pass. We work a lot with her on that. It’s difficult because you tell the players all we want to do is progress to the thirds, and we need to be clever in when we need to switch, when we need to penetrate wide, centrally, over, around, and that’s where we give them the tools, and they are the magicians that execute it.

“Tierna, she’s done a very great effort for the week, for the team. The fact that we won the game with an assist from her was fantastic.”

Davidson’s efforts on both sides of the ball helped the Bats to a 3-0-1 record in May. Gotham is currently in fifth place in the NWSL standings and is carrying an unbeaten run of six consecutive league matches.

It is the second time in her career that she has been named to the NWSL Best XI of the Month. Previously, Davidson earned that honor in September 2021.

Davidson offers Gotham a tremendous all-around presence every time she pulls on the captain’s armband and takes the pitch. In May, she won 17 of 24 duels and made 16 clearances. Through 10 league games played, the 5-foot-10 defender has won 67 percent of tackles.

She completed 87.6 percent of passes during the month and has recorded an 88 percent pass completion rate across 547 NWSL minutes this season.
