From Leading Man To Vanishing Role: Bradley’s System Has Sidelined Choupo-Moting at Red Bull New York

Red Bull New York forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has been forced to settle for scraps in his second season at the club after scoring 17 MLS goals last season.

The 37-year-old has only started once in the current MLS campaign and has averaged 14 minutes per appearance through nine games played, missing one match that he was set to start away to FC Cincinnati due to illness.

Choupo-Moting’s lone goal this season was a dramatic 97th-minute equalizer against Toronto FC that grabbed a point at BMO Field after he was summoned from the bench as a 77th-minute substitute.

First-year head coach Michael Bradley has opted to start rapid-developing 18-year-old forward Julian Hall in Choupo-Moting’s place with Jorge Ruvalcaba and Cade Cowell occupying the wings.

That decision has been validated by Hall’s output of six goals and two through 11 MLS matches.

Bradley’s System Leaves Choupo-Moting Relegated to Cameo Appearances

It’s understandable why Hall is favored in Bradley’s preferred 4-3-3 formation, which requires fast legs, boundless energy and ceaseless counterpressing.

That said, on Saturday, Red Bull New York needed someone who could create chaos in the box and sniff out opportunistic scoring chances after FC Dallas went ahead 1-0 in the 54th minute. It felt like the game was calling out for Choupo-Moting’s cleverness, his hold-up play and 6-foot-3 frame to draw attention and his aerial presence in the box.

Choupo-Moting should have been given an opportunity to change the match, and it’s hard to make an impact when you’re thrown into the dying moments in the 83rd minute. Red Bull New York drifted in the second half and were eventually beaten 2-0 by FC Dallas.

South Ward Central asked Bradley about his decision to bring on Choupo-Moting late in the match.

“Choupo has quality, right — and so you always feel like you can put him on at any moment,” Bradley responded. “His ability to find space in the box, use his skill, use his savviness to be able to get a chance or a goal, you feel like that can happen at any moment. It’s always the balance as you move through a game.

“Again, in certain moments, we’ve brought Choupo on and moved Jules out to the left, or we’ve used Jules a little bit as an eight in the midfield. But as we move through games, it’s always trying to figure out on any given day, what does the game look like? How much are we getting from the guys on the field? How much do we want to change? How early do we want to change? So, yeah, those are all the factors.”

Bradley: ‘Choupo Will Start More Games This Year’

Bradley suggested that Choupo-Moting will get his share of opportunities as the season wears on. It sounds like a matter of the veteran forward having to wait for his turn rather than being out of Bradley’s plans entirely, but for the moment, he’s been reduced to serving as a bit part player.

“I’m sure that Choupo will start more games this year,” Bradley stated. “Obviously, the way that we play, Julian can play in different positions. But for right now, we still see Julian as a nine and Choupo as a nine.”

“So it’s not necessarily that easy to think about having them both on the field together for long periods of time. In this first part of the season, Julian has obviously gotten off to a really good start, has scored a lot of goals, has made a lot of important plays, gives the team a lot in terms of his work against the ball. But obviously, as we move through the season, absolutely, we’re going to continue to rely on Choupo and his experience and his quality and his ability to make really important plays for us.”

Bradley’s System Still Needs a Plan B Option

So far, there haven’t been any rumblings of discontent, and Choupo-Moting has served as a valuable mentor to Hall and other progressing young Red Bulls.

Bradley has been steadfast in his belief in a 4-3-3 formation and having his players adopt a front-footed, aggressive and imposing brand of football.

But he needs a plan B when the match demands a stylistic change, and to get the most out of a roster that includes Choupo-Moting’s vast experience and eye for goals.
