Red Bull New York has strengthened Michael Bradley’s staff by adding former Liverpool chief analyst Greg Mathieson in an assistant coaching and head of match analysis dual role.

The Eastern Conference-leading MLS club announced their latest staff addition on Thursday.

Mathieson spent eight years with the Premier League giants, first as an opponent analyst and later as a chief analyst in a position where he worked closely with legendary head coach Jürgen Klopp.

The Irvine, Scotland native performed in the role of chief analyst for 290 matches under Klopp, who is currently serving as Red Bull GmbH’s head of global soccer.

Bradley is appreciative of the opportunity to work alongside Mathieson, who brings tremendous experience and keen intellect to Red Bull New York.

“Greg brings a strong football mind to our staff, and his experience and attention to detail will add real value to our team,” Bradley stated. “We are excited to have him join us as we continue to push the team forward.”

While at Liverpool, Mathieson was part of Klopp’s backroom staff that played a role in the Reds winning the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, the 2019-20 English Premier League title, the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, the 2022 FA Cup final and the 2022 EFL Cup final.

He most recently worked as an opponent analyst for Qatar’s national team. His influence helped Qatar win the 2023 Asian Cup and secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mathieson also worked in various scouting, coaching and analysis roles for West Ham United, Blackburn Rovers, Hibernian and Dundee United.

His arrival at Red Bull New York compliments a deep staff that already includes Bradley, assistant coaches Mike Sorber and Ibrahim Sekagya and goalkeepers coach Jeremy Proud.
