Red Bull New York’s troubles against CF Montréal continued on Saturday as the visiting Red Bulls were defeated 4-1 at Saputo Stadium.
Montréal immediately put the Red Bulls under pressure when the match kicked off, and a mistake-prone Red Bull back line gifted them ample amounts of high-danger chances.
Red Bull New York Defensive Errors Punished Early in Montréal
Captain Emil Forsberg miscontrolled a pass from goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, which allowed Victor Loturi to send Montréal ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute.
Montréal was awarded a penalty after a handball by defender Dylan Nealis was confirmed by VAR. Prince Owusu calmly converted the opportunity and doubled Montréal’s advantage to 2-0 in the 39th minute.
Though Montréal entered Saturday in last place among all 30 MLS clubs, they easily found open spaces and put the Red Bulls under frequent duress.
“Physically, we had nothing tonight in terms of energy, in terms of intensity, in terms of the ability to stay connected and step up, move over, sprint back when we needed to. We were in those ways, we were really poor,” head coach Michael Bradley said in his post-match press conference.
Red Bulls Must Respond Against D.C. United
Matty Longstaff increased Montreal’s lead to 3-0 in the 49th minute. It must have felt like déjà vu for Red Bull supporters after New York was trounced 3-0 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in the third match of the season.
Four minutes later, an error by Longstaff would put the Red Bulls on the scoreboard. The English midfielder committed an own goal in the 53rd minute that sliced Montréal’s lead to 3-1.
However, it did not inspire a Red Bull comeback charge. The Red Bulls continued to look exposed, stretched and sloppy in defense. Kwadwo Opoku put the match out of reach by scoring in the 77th minute.
Several confident saves by Horvath limited the damage to four goals. It could’ve been worse.
“Today is one that we’ve got to use in the right way to make sure that we really understand the things that we’ve got to improve going forward,” Bradley stated. “We have to understand the things that make us a good team and make sure that they are there every single time we step onto the field.”
Incredibly, Montréal outscored New York 7-1 in the season series, and these are Montréal’s only two wins through eight MLS matches played.
The Red Bulls cannot afford to be leaky and faulty against D.C. United at home on Wednesday.
