Victory+ recently launched an innovative way to bring NWSL fans unique perspectives through live broadcasts by partnering with social media creators in engaging “alt-casts.”

Last Sunday, NWSL fans were given options on how to stream the meeting of the last two NWSL champions, Gotham FC and the Orlando Pride.

Viewers could choose between the NWSL Sunday Night Soccer broadcast with play-by-play voice Mike Watts and former NWSL midfielder McCall Zerboni on the call or stream the alt-cast with social media star Coach Jackie J and former NWSL goalkeeper Brittany Wilson Isenhour providing insights.

South Ward Central spoke with Alexandra Cooper, who serves as Victory+ VP of Creator Content and Audience Development, about the exciting venture of the alt-cast that connects fans, athletes and creators.

“The game is the same, but the experience is entirely different,” Cooper said. “It’s more conversational, it’s less formal and a two-way experience. It allows you to have real-time reactions, jokes and emotional moments where the creator is reacting to their favorite athlete.”

How Creators and Players Are Shaping the Broadcast

It became immediately clear that the alt-cast is not your typical traditional sports broadcast. You get the feeling that anything could happen at any given time on the Alt-Cast.

At one point, Jackie J and Wilson Isenhour pulled up and reacted to a video of Orlando players singing Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.”

Wilson Isenhour and Jackie J reacted to audience questions in real time and shared storytelling moments like Wilson Isenhour’s memories of playing with Orlando Pride legend Marta, Jackie J recalling her experience of meeting Gotham midfielder Savannah McCaskill at a youth soccer camp and their impressions of the Denver Summit record-breaking season opener, which drew a single-game NWSL championship record of 63,004 spectators.

“We are trying to create an ecosystem where both live sports and creator content can coexist,” Cooper explained. “We are approaching creators that make strong content with a strong POV that we believe is a good fit for our apps.”

Victory+ Is Targeting a New Generation of NWSL Fans

Social creators Jackie J, Malwoso, Jack Grimse and Alfardy have joined Victory+’s creator network, which allows them to embrace their authentic style.

“We want to make sure that we preserve the creative lens of the creator,” Cooper said. “We want to lean into the fact that they know their audience and they understand our niche communities, and we want to enable them and empower them to make content for those communities rather than us just changing it and having them making content that we think is going to work.”

When a creator like Jackie J is paired with a former pro in Wilson Isenhour, it can be a powerful driver for the 17-24 aged audience.

“It’s a different audience from who’s watching the main broadcast,” Cooper stated. “What this alt-cast is doing is getting in these newer fans who are more social fans of soccer. They haven’t grown up with it; they’re just now getting into it. This becomes a very approachable and interactive experience for them, which is what we saw in the comments and what the sentiment was on Sunday.”
