Gotham FC captain Tierna Davidson made her long-awaited return to match action in Gotham’s home opening scoreless draw against the North Carolina Courage on Saturday.

A torn ACL kept Davidson sidelined for just shy of a full calendar year, 358 days to be exact.

“It felt amazing,” Davidson said of her experience of stepping back onto the field. “I was very happy to be back out there in an official game with my teammates. I felt supported and very excited.”

The opportunity to rejoin her teammates on the pitch meant everything to the popular 27-year-old captain who underwent an extensive rehabilitation program to be available for selection once again.

Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós was delighted for Davidson to return to match action.

“Tierna is such a special player,” Amorós stated. “When she’s on the pitch, she’s probably one of the most technical players that play on the backline, probably in the world and on top of that, she’s left-footed, which is also even more rare.

“She’s a great leader on and off the pitch, she’s so calm on the ball. She’s just a different player for me. I don’t want to put pressure on her, but I think she’s probably the best left-footed center-back on the planet for the way I see the game. Obviously, she’s someone that we’ve really missed.”

Davidson: ‘It’s Just Another Step’

Davidson suffered the injury three games into last season’s NWSL schedule when Gotham earned an away draw to the Houston Dash at Houston’s Shell Energy Stadium on March 28, 2025.

A massive roar went up around Sports Illustrated Stadium when Davidson replaced Kayla Duran in the 61st minute.

Following the match, Davidson described her rehab as ongoing, but it was an encouraging step toward her eventually being able to take part in a full 90 minutes.

“It’s just another step in the recovery journey,” she said. “I don’t think that a recovery journey is complete when you step back out onto the field. There’s still work to be done. I’m really happy with where I’m at.”
