Cade Cowell is starting to show Red Bull New York supporters glimpses of the game-changing ability that will bring supporters out of their seats at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Cowell’s raw talent is abundantly clear. The pacey 22-year-old winger offers a multitude of trickery, skillful moves and deft turns that can unsettle opposition defenses.
He was acquired on loan from Chivas de Guadalajara in December because of his growth potential, and he appears to have the ideal mentor in first-year Red Bull New York head coach Michael Bradley.
The Harrison-based club is hoping that Bradley’s eye for detail and high standards can help Cowell take his game to the next level.
Michael Bradley Helping Shape Cowell’s Development

Though Bradley is taking his first strides as an MLS head coach, his 151 appearances for the United States national team, combined with his experiences across Europe’s top leagues and within Major League Soccer, will undoubtedly aid Cowell’s development.
Cowell has been keen to learn from Bradley in film sessions. As the season unfolds, he and his teammates will gain a greater understanding of how to complement each other within Bradley’s intense, high-pressing system.
“It definitely took me some time to get used to nonstop pressure,” Cowell said. “I really like it. It took me some time, obviously, because it’s something that I haven’t done. Now that I’ve watched a lot of film with Michael about it and we’ve talked about it, I’m really enjoying it. It has been going really well.”
Cowell previously made 69 appearances for CD Guadalajara, where he recorded 12 goals and five assists. Through his first three matches for the Red Bulls, he has registered one assist across 264 minutes of play while completing 73 percent of his passes.
Opportunity for Cowell and Red Bulls To Respond Against Toronto FC

Red Bull New York has the option to make Cowell’s transfer permanent at the end of his loan. The 6-foot attacker is keeping his focus on team improvement rather than individual stats.
“I think stats will come, but it’s my first 90s in a while so I’m pretty happy with that,” he said. “There’s a lot more I can give, so I’ll tell you that. I’m pretty happy. It’s going well.
“We’re a very young team. Mistakes will happen. I think this is a really good learning spot for us. I think coming Tuesday at training, we’re not going to think twice about it. All the focus is going to be going to Toronto, getting three points from there, and it’s going to be good.”
Saturday will bring an opportunity for Cowell and the Red Bulls to put the disappointment of this past weekend’s 3-0 home defeat to CF Montréal behind them with a better showing on the road against Toronto FC.
“It’s a very long season for one. I mean, we’re going into our fourth game, you know. And for one, you know, there’s a lot of ups and downs. There’s a lot of, you know, a lot of wins and a very upset game like today. But it’s a long season, and I think we’re going to go into Saturday with a clean mind and be ready.
Toronto were at their stingy best when they shut out FC Cincinnati 1-0 on Sunday, but Cowell has bags of tricks in his locker. He and his teammates will look for the right combinations to unlock Toronto’s backline and put Red Bull New York back on a winning path.
