Sunday’s defeat was a day to forget for Red Bull New York, but it was a day to savor for returning former Red Bulls attacker Wiki Carmona.

The 23-year-old Venezuelan who was shipped north of the border to Montréal in exchange for defender Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty came back to haunt the Red Bulls in CF Montréal’s 3-0 victory at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Carmona recorded a brace after forward Prince Owusu pushed the visitors ahead with an eighth-minute penalty.

He doubled Montréal’s advantage in the 44th minute by guiding a free kick past a two-man Red Bull wall that nestled in the far corner beyond shuffling New York goalkeeper Ethan Horvath.

His 68th-minute strike put the match beyond any doubt. Horvath and his teammates played needlessly risky passes around the penalty area as Montréal pressed. Carmona won the ball off Adri Mehmeti and only needed to make the simplest of finishes.

South Ward Central spoke with Carmona to get his reaction following the match.

“I feel really good for the win, for my teammates,” told South Ward Central. “I’m so happy. The focus now is thinking to the next game and getting three points. I think it’s really, really good memories here in this stadium. I’m so happy for the memories.”

After making his April 17, 2021, debut for the Red Bulls, Carmona made 118 appearances across all competitions for the club and scored six goals.

Carmona appears to be suited to Marco Donadel’s system and is playing with newfound belief, while Red Bull New York is quite happy with Marshall-Rutty’s encouraging start. Both sides seem to have gotten what they desired from the trade.
