First-place Gotham FC has its eyes focused on capturing its first-ever NWSL Shield.
On Saturday at First Horizon Stadium, the Bats could move one step closer. Should they earn a victory against the fifth-place North Carolina Courage on Saturday, it would put Gotham six points ahead of second-place San Diego Wave FC.
The matchup of the NWSL’s leading scorers in North Carolina and best defense in Gotham should make for an intriguing contest.
North Carolina’s offense is led by Ashley Sanchez, who is atop the NWSL Golden Boot race, having scored 19 goals through 24 matches.
Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós is aware that the Courage, who have scored 47 goals, pack a strong collective punch and are difficult to beat on Carolina turf.
“Obviously, with Ashley, she’s been fantastic this year and something obviously for us to be really aware of,” Amorós explained. “But I think one thing that this team has shown is that they are not one player dependent.
“I think it’s also a stadium where traditionally they are very strong. Maybe they’ve been worse [at home] this year than other seasons in terms of results, but it’s a very difficult place to go and play. I think that they are very strong in this place. Obviously, we’ve had some really good memories like the playoff game and some of the games that we’ve played here.
“But at the same time, that’s always a challenge now for us. Playing so many games without our fans is always difficult. One thing that is good is at the same time there is a always a big Gotham representation on this trip. Cloud 9 has been coming the last few years so hopefully they are here, and we can really celebrate that massive three points with them.”
Nahas, Speck, O’Sullivan, Boade Return To North Carolina
Gotham FC’s interim director of methodology Sean Nahas and midfielders Meredith Speck, Denise O’Sullivan and Tess Boade have strong ties with the Courage.
Nahas spent just short of four years as the Courage’s head coach from late September 2021 through August 6, 2025.
“Adding Sean to the staff is fantastic,” Amorós said. “He’s a coach and a person that I really respected from his time here when we used to compete against each other. I think he’s giving us another dimension especially on the ball supporting on certain ways and what we call the fluidity in the possession and also his experiences. It’s really good for me, for the crew, for the players, for the staff. So I think that that definitely gives us another dimension.”
Speck and O’Sullivan played for over eight seasons with the Courage and delivered seven trophies, while Boade played her first two NWSL seasons with the club. O’Sullivan captained the Courage for three seasons.
“It’s a different club, different players now it’s a different situation,” Amorós explained. “Meredith, Denise and Tess, they were [in North Carolina] for a long time and it’s obviously a special game for them but it’s not only about what they bring for this game.
“It’s about what they bring every day. The three of them have been fantastic. Their attitude, how they come in every day and ready to support every role when they are called upon or do. I’m very surprised and happy that we’ve added them to the team. They’ve been honestly a joy to work with.”
Latest Lineup and Injury News Ahead of Saturday’s Gotham-Courage Match
Gotham midfielder Sofia Cook remains out due to an ankle injury, while goalkeeper Shelby Hogan is dealing with an illness and will miss the match, meaning that rookie Teagan Wy will back up starter Ann-Katrin Berger.

Starting XI: Berger, Purce, Carter, Davidson (C), Reiten, Howell, O’Sullivan, Shaw, Lavelle, Kerr, Dudley.
Subs: Wy, Boade, Bruninha, Freeman, Kitahata, McCaskill, Sommer, Speck, Torres
Defenders Kayla Duran and Emily Sonnett are both considered long-term absences due to season-ending knee injuries.
OUT: Sofia Cook (lower leg), Kayla Duran (knee – SEI), Shelby Hogan (illness), Emily Sonnett (knee – SEI)
North Carolina will contend with seven confirmed absences.
