Red Bull New York midfielder Gustav Berggren is on the verge of sealing a move to defending Polish Ekstraklasa champions Lech Poznań.

According to Swedish outlet Aftonbladet, Lech Poznań has agreed to a €500,000 transfer with the Red Bulls to acquire the 28-year-old midfielder.

Berggren was in attendance at Poznań Stadium on Sunday as first-place Lech Poznań defeated Piast Gliwice 3-0. With an official announcement not far away, Berggren’s imminent departure will open a space in Red Bull New York’s midfield.

Captain Emil Forsberg, 21-year-old Ronald Donkor and 17-year-old Adri Mehmeti have started the majority of MLS matches, leaving Berggren sparse opportunities. Berggren made four MLS starts this season and appeared in 12 league matches. He contributed two assists and was occasionally deployed as an emergency center-back.

The August 1 home victory over Orlando City SC will be Berggren’s final appearance for the Red Bulls. He played for the entire 90 minutes in the 3-2 win at Sports Illustrated Stadium in central midfield duty. The 6-foot-2 Swede took the place of Mehmeti, who was suspended after he was sent off near the end of a 2-0 defeat to Charlotte FC on July 25.

Now that Berggren is inching closer to being unveiled as Lech Poznań’s latest signing, it will open a space on the Red Bull New York roster.

Nehuén Benedetti replaced Forsberg toward the end of the Orlando City victory. The 21-year-old has made six substitute appearances in MLS play but has been limited to 86 minutes.

It’s possible that Benedetti’s role could grow. Another player who could step into first-team action is Red Bull New York II captain Nate Worth.

Worth Could Make MLS Debut Against Atlanta United

The 19-year-old has been named to the bench for multiple MLS matches but has yet to make his MLS debut.

“It would mean the world, honestly,” Worth recently told South Ward Central. “It’s something I’ve dreamt of as a young kid going through the academy. Even when I was U12, U13, I went to all of the first team games at the arena, and I’ve always pictured myself in their shoes one day and dreamt of that.”

Worth’s MLS debut could potentially arrive in Saturday’s road match against Atlanta United. Kick off for Saturday’s contest at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
