Reigning NWSL champions Gotham FC have continued to shape their roster in a bold direction. On Wednesday, the club traded 2025 NWSL Rookie of the Year Lilly Reale to Boston Legacy FC in exchange for $350,000 in allocation money and $50,000 in intraleague transfer funds.
It didn’t take long for the Bats to put the newly freed-up funds to good use. Hours later on Wednesday, in a sensational move, world-class striker Sam Kerr agreed to return to Gotham FC.
The news was first reported by The Athletic. Kerr will join this summer once her contract at Chelsea expires.
What Kerr’s Arrival Means for Gotham’s Attack

Gotham could use a bit more goalscoring punch after only scoring 12 goals through the first 11 games of the 2026 NWSL season. She is the only player in women’s soccer history to have won a Golden Boot in three different leagues across three different continents.
Kerr rejoins Gotham after leaving the club in 2017, back when the franchise was known as Sky Blue FC. The now 32-year-old previously netted 28 goals in 40 appearances for Sky Blue.
She became a free agent following sevens silverware filled seasons with Chelsea. Kerr captured 11 major trophies for the Blues and scored 116 goals across 158 total appearances for the London club.
In rejoining Gotham, the Australian international will be reunited with several former teammates from various stops in her career including, Guro Reiten, Jess Carter, Ann-Katrin Berger, Mandy Freeman, Savannah McCaskill and Tierna Davidson.
South Ward Central will continue to bring you transfer coverage and further reaction to Kerr’s return to Gotham FC.
