Gotham FC president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch West praised former Bats defender Lilly Reale following the 22-year-old’s move to Boston Legacy FC.

Reale was traded to Boston on Wednesday in exchange for $350,000 in allocation money and $50,000 in intraleague transfer funds.

“Lilly has been an important part of our club since joining Gotham FC last season,” Averbuch West said in a statement. “She has made significant contributions to our success on and off the field, and we are grateful for everything she has brought to Gotham. We wish her all the best moving forward.”

Reale’s Departure Highlights Gotham FC’s Defensive Depth Concerns

Reale played a key role in helping Gotham capture last season’s trophy double as the Bats took home the inaugural Concacaf W Champions Cup and the 2025 NWSL title. Her impact was clear as she made 31 appearances across all competitions during an impressive debut season that saw her earn the 2025 NWSL Rookie of the Year.

Though Gotham’s NWSL Championship trophy defense has been tested by a multitude of injuries — especially to the back line the club has found creative solutions to remain defensively sound. Gotham has conceded a league-low five goals against through 11 league matches and leads the NWSL with eight shutouts.

Natural left-winger Guro Reiten has consistently started at left-back since her arrival from Chelsea, and forward Midge Purce has filled in at right-back throughout the season. Jaelin Howell and rookie duo Andrea Kitahata and Talia Sommer have occasionally been called into defensive duty.

How Gotham FC Could Use the Allocation Money

It will be interesting to see how Averbuch West chooses to allocate the newly gained funds. Defensive depth is a concern, especially given that the squad has been stretched by injuries and has had very few breaks since the start of last season.

According to league rules, the $350,000 in allocation money acquired from Boston will remain available to Gotham through the 2027 season and existing allocation money must be spent or withdrawn by the end of the 2026 calendar.

UPDATE: Gotham FC Sign Sam Kerr according to the Athletic. More to follow….

Averbuch West has made a habit of collecting star players who fit into Gotham’s winning culture and possess the tenacity to attack and defend up and down the pitch in head coach Juan Carlos Amorós’ physically demanding system.

Gotham Continues To Push for Star Signings

Back in late April, during Reiten’s introductory press conference, Averbuch West spoke of the salary cap being the only limitation to Gotham’s ability to recruit top class talents.

“Our limiting factor now is the salary cap, not our ability to attract players,” she stated. “That position has been earned through hard work, developing players and doing right by them. That said, it has to be continually earned every day. Not every player has a perfect experience. It’s competitive, but our ability to recruit comes from what we do daily and what players say about us. We’re not perfect, but we do our best to support players and create a great environment. That comes back around and compounds over time.”

Now that the money and roster spot have been freed up, the intrigue will surround whether Gotham presses on with big-name signings or shores up need positions at the back.

Gotham currently only has five healthy defenders on the books in captain Tierna Davidson, Jess Carter, Emily Sonnett, Bruninha and Mandy Freeman — and that’s if Bruninha and Freeman are given the all clear ahead of the June 26 NWSL Challenge Cup against the NWSL Shield-holding Kansas City Current. The Challenge Cup will take place at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, Columbus, Ohio, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Kayla Duran has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury.

Both Bruninha (hamstring) and Freeman (lower leg injury) were listed as out on the NWSL availability report prior to the Bats’ 1-0 victory over the Houston Dash on May 31. That said, it’s possible that Freeman and Bruninha could be available for selection after continued rehabilitation during the NWSL’s break.
