Julian Hall’s torrid start to the MLS season continued on Wednesday as his hat trick lifted Red Bull New York to a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Crew.
The 18-year-old forward became the youngest player in MLS history to score a hat trick. has now grabbed nine goals through 13 MLS matches this season.
Julian Hall Completes Stunning, Record Hat Trick
It only took seven minutes for Hall to put New York ahead 1-0. Red Bull captain Emil Forsberg played the ball to the outside of the box to Cade Cowell, who supplied Hall’s opener.
Crew Dominated Possession But Couldn’t Stop Hall
Columbus dominated first-half possession at 62 percent and winger Max Arfsten leveled the match in the 22nd minute with a superb finish.
Hall would again strike in the 40th minute. Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty’s long ball sent Cowell surging down the wing. Cowell connected again with Hall, who only needed the simplest of finishes to regain New York’s lead.
The Red Bulls went into halftime up 2-1 after Hall’s second goal stood after a lengthy VAR review checked for a potential foul.
Columbus would continue their possession dominance in the second half and pressured the Red Bull back line. An Omar Valencia handball gave the Crew a 64th-minute penalty.
Substitute Diego Rossi had no problem converting from the spot to even the contest at 2-2.
An 78th-minute corner kick delivered by Rafael Mosquera was headed down by Gustav Berggren — and Hall poked home his third of the night to complete his hat trick.
