Gotham FC Haven’t Hit Top Form to Start NWSL Season, But It’s Not Time to Panic

Gotham FC traveled to Kansas City with the hope of kicking their season into full gear, but left CPKC Stadium with a 2-1 defeat that extended the Bats’ winless streak to four matches.

Similar to their March 29 scoreless draw to the Orlando Pride, Gotham showed clear improvement in their attacking sequences but lacked the finishing touch to put their opponents away.

Jaedyn Shaw made an immediate impact in her return to the starting XI by slotting home a precise strike in the 29th minute to get Gotham out to a 1-0 lead.

Kansas City attackers Debinha and Michelle Cooper scored without reply to send Gotham to its worst start of the Juan Carlos Amorós era. Gotham has opened the 2026 NWSL campaign with five points through five matches, an underwhelming start that no one was expecting after last season’s title glory.

Shaun Harris Calls for Clinical Finishing

Following Saturday’s defeat, acting head coach Shaun Harris called for the Bats to find their scoring boots while maintaining the focus needed in critical moments.

“We improved in areas we worked on from the last couple of games, especially getting more chances in and around the box,” Harris said. “We had lapses in concentration in two key moments and were punished for it. We spoke about that at halftime — we needed to stay switched on in those moments.

“Going forward, creating chances and moving the ball in the opposition half, we did well. We just need to manage transitions better, which we knew would be important. They were more clinical than us. We’re still dealing with the same issue — getting chances but not putting them away. It’s something we’ve been focusing on, and we’ll keep pushing to get it right.”

Defensive Lapses Proved Costly in Kansas City

Back-to-back NWSL MVP and consecutive Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga drew the attention of multiple Gotham defenders on Debinha’s tying goal in the 37th minute.

On the winning goal, Gotham’s typically rock-solid defender Lilly Reale failed to clear and headed the ball directly into the feet of Current forward Ally Sentnor, who assisted Cooper.

“There were a few controllables that we didn’t manage well today, especially defensively,” defender Jess Carter stated. “That’s where the frustration comes from — things we could have done better.”

Injuries, minutes restrictions, the demands of international travel and fixture pileups without being able to catch a break have taken a toll on the defending NWSL champions and reigning Concacaf W Champions Cup winners.

“It makes things difficult,” Harris said of the limitations of minute restrictions. “We had players on restrictions, and when Kayla [Duran] went down early, we had to make decisions about whether to get through to halftime or make a change earlier. Those restrictions make decisions harder, and you just have to adapt and work with what you have.”

Injuries and Rotations Continue to Challenge Gotham FC

Shaw is just beginning to build her way back after missing three consecutive matches. The 21-year-old looked incredibly sharp in the first half and was replaced by Jordynn Dudley to start the second half.

Davidson has been limited to 118 minutes across four matches while she’s being eased back into action following a long-term knee injury.

With several players on minute restrictions and Bruninha (hamstring), Mandy Freeman (lower leg) and Taryn Torres (knee – SEI) unavailable, Gotham’s depth is being tested.

A concerning injury to Duran appears to have dealt another headache, especially with the backline having to make do with several absences. The 26-year-old right-back was replaced in the 18th minute after an apparent knee injury.

Gotham will be hoping that Duran’s injury isn’t as bad as initially feared, and perhaps the international break will allow some players to heal up and others to rediscover their best performances with their respective national teams.

International Break Could Be a Turning Point

“We haven’t started the season the way we’d like,” Carter said. “We need to go away, do our best with our national teams, stay fit, stay healthy and get some rest. Then we come back ready to work hard, regroup and move forward in a positive way. It’s early in the season, but we need to turn things around and find solutions as a group.”

Gotham will return to action at home at Sports Illustrated Stadium on April 25 against Bay FC. Long campaigns can have their share of ups and downs. It happened last season, right before the Bats summoned an inspirational run to lift the NWSL championship trophy.

We all know what this squad is capable of when they’re fit and firing. Sometimes it just takes time to build.

Once the chemistry is there and the squad is healthier, the Bats will fly again.
